The Maldives is using this summer to make a statement to the world, as the transition of its reputation from a destination for docile experiences to one of sports tourism reaches its peak. With the successful conclusion of the BGC Fulhangi Challenge in Baa Goidhoo and the anticipation building for the upcoming Maldives Pro 2026, the local scene is seeing an unprecedented level of intensity and professional growth.
The Fulhangi Challenge
The Baa Goidhoo Council (BGC) Fulhangi Challenge 2026 (June 28 – July 5) concluded with record-breaking participation, drawing 43 kitesurfers to the island. The event was defined by the commanding presence of Hassan Mahir (Hantey), who swept the competition to be crowned the Overall Champion.

Mamnoon Niyaz (Mannu)
Serving as the championship's curtain-raiser, the Freestyle division treated spectators to spectacular aerial maneuvers and technical tricks that showcased how much the local talent has evolved as of late. The local scene completely dominated this division: Goidhoo’s own Mannu and Raaippe took third and second place, respectively, while Hantey cemented his hold on the podium by delivering a performance unlike anything ever seen in the Maldivian kitesurfing scene.
Twin-Tip Slalom Results
Following the technical precision of the freestyle event, the Twin-Tip Slalom race pushed athletes to their physical limits. Thriving in a hyper-competitive environment focused on raw speed and technical maneuvering, it was a heart-pounding contest that led to another top spot for Hantey. Mannu stepped up to second place, while the underdog, Abdulla Abaan, came in clutch with a surprising performance in the later rounds, securing a hard-earned third spot on the podium.

With these results, Hantey secured the overall title of the Fulhangi Challenge, capturing the highest prize earnings of the competition as well. While Hantey maintains his position at the apex, events like these show that the new generation is developing at a rate that is shaking up the established hierarchy.
